Surviving Earth
In the time of plague, hearts stop beating
There is death and the migration begins.
This earth that will survive us warns
Then slaughters.
Will this be it for our kind
Or will we grow, adapting like ants
Floating down the river as an island
Unified, surviving
Rebuilding downstream.
Migrants search for belonging.
Old customs dissolving
Dissolution.
Dichotomy of rich and poor
Straining Earth’s boundaries.
She quakes and storms.
No more separation.
Swim downstream she says.
Form again.
You are heavy and need washing
Out into ocean salinity.
Build again.
With love and unity as your way out of my
Reach.
Storms call for love and acceptance.
Do right by me old ancestors say.
Earth answers by taking more under water
Into fire
Waves of heat and waters of salt.
Change course.
Listen to the children.
They begin anew.
We will follow.
